VIDEO: Disco Demoliton Night at Comiskey Park in 1979

February 14, 2017 No Comments »

There’s never been anything quite like it. Between games of a doubleheader on July 12, 1979, the Chicago White Sox, led by promoter extraordinaire Mike Veeck, asked a local disc jockey to blow up disco records in center field. What could go wrong?

Everything went wrong. The rock-and-roll loving (and disco-hating) fans who were invited on the field for the promotion went crazy and the explosion in center field erupted into a fire that removed a large patch of grass in the outfield. Authorities had to storm the field and use force to get the fans off the field. The second game of the doubleheader between the White Sox and visiting Tigers was forfeited to Detroit.

Here’s the full video of Game One and the ensuing melee that resulted in the forfeiture can be seen toward the end of the clip.
